The Carbohydrate Metabolism of Staphylococcus Aureus*

چکیده

The rapid growth of staphylococci in the usual laboratory media consisting of meat infusion or meat extract, peptone, buffer, and metabolizable carbohydrate is accompanied by the consumption of sugar and the production of much acid; only relatively slight changes are noted in the nitrogenous constituents (Kendall, Farmer, Bagg, and Day (1)). Kendall, Friedemann, and Ishikawa (2) obtained a yield of from 46 to 79 per cent of lactic acid from the metabolized sugar by the action of bacterial suspensions at 42” under relatively aerobic conditions. From 40 to 77 per cent of pyruvic acid was converted into lactic acid; considerable quantities of volatile acids and CO2 were also obtained. Similar results were obtained by Krebs (3) and by Barron and Lyman (4). A number of text-books state that the metabolism of carbohydrate leads to the liberation of acids, chiefly lactic, with small quantities of form& acetic, propionic, butyric, and’ valerianic acids (see, for example, Kendall (5)). A review of the literature thus indicates that the chief products of carbohydrate metabolism have not been determined.

GENOMICS AND PROTEOMICS Microarray analysis of toxicogenomic effects of triclosan on Staphylococcus aureus

For the first time, a genome-wide transcriptional analysis was performed to elucidate the cellular response of Staphylococcus aureus to triclosan. Our results indicate that the effects of triclosan are widespread on metabolism, affecting many vital cellular processes. Triclosan downregulated the transcription of genes involved in virulence factor and energy metabolism such as amino acid, carboh...

The Vitamin B1 Metabolism of Staphylococcus aureus Is Controlled at Enzymatic and Transcriptional Levels

Vitamin B1 is in its active form thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP), an essential cofactor for several key enzymes in the carbohydrate metabolism. Mammals must salvage this crucial nutrient from their diet in order to complement the deficiency of de novo synthesis. In the human pathogenic bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, two operons were identified which are involved in vitamin B1 metabolism. The fir...

Synthesis of Staphylococcus aureus lipoteichoic acid derivatives for determining the minimal structural requirements for cytokine induction.

For the investigation of the minimal structural requirements for cytokine induction, Staphylococcus aureus lipoteichoic acid derivatives with two, three, four, and five glycerophosphate backbone moieties, carrying each a d-alanyl residue, were needed. Based on two different glycerophosphate building blocks and 6b-O-phosphitylated gentiobiosyl diacylglycerol the desired target molecules (compoun...

Staphylococcus aureus virulence expression is impaired by Lactococcus lactis in mixed cultures.

Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for numerous food poisonings due to the production of enterotoxins by strains contaminating foodstuffs, especially dairy products. Several parameters, including interaction with antagonistic flora such as Lactococcus lactis, a lactic acid bacterium widely used in the dairy industry, can modulate S. aureus proliferation and virulence expression. We developed ...

Transcriptome analysis of Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. gallolyticus in interaction with THP-1 macrophage-like cells

BACKGROUND Streptococcus gallolyticus subsp. gallolyticus (S. gallolyticus) is a pathogen of infective endocarditis. It was observed previously that this bacterium survives longer in macrophages than other species and the phagocytic uptake by and survival in THP-1 macrophages is strain-dependent. METHODS The phagocytosis assay was performed with THP-1 macrophages. S. gallolyticus specific who...

Molecular Characteristics of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Isolated from Diabetic Foot Infection

Background & Objective: Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU), is one of the most frequent causes for hospitalizations in patients with diabetes. A major problem in the treatment of DFU is the increased-incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The aim of this study was to determine the SCCmec types of MRSA isolates and their epidemiology among pati...
